france.fr
The official website for the country of France, it was launched with much fanfare on Bastille Day in 2010, only to crash within minutes, producing dozens of articles highlighting the high-profile failure. Web Performance, Inc. was hired to help fix the problem, and the site was relaunched in August, 2010 after being tuned for 27,000 concurrent users. Web Performance found the performance problem, which prompted the team to change their hosting provider, and the new site was launched with no issues. The france.fr is a very complex Drupal installation, consisting of 28 web servers, 18 proxy servers, 2 database servers, and a handful of logging servers.
New York Marathon
New York Road Runners is the organization behind the world-famous New York Marathon, which runs through all five boroughs of New York City. Web Performance was brought in in 2009 and again in 2010 to test the servers than provide live race information to the millions of fans world-wide. In any given race there are approximately 40,000 runners participating, with 20-30 runners crossing the finish line per second, and their progress through the course is updated live as the race progresses. Fans register to monitor the status of one or more runners in real time, and these individual status pages are updated continuously. Web Performance tested and tuned the capacity of the Athlete Tracking Website up to a level of 60,000 concurrent users, and the site performed admirably during the actual race.
Florida No Child Left Behind Online Testing
As part of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, the State of Florida implemented the End of Grade testing as an online web-based application. These tests are administered to all children in public schools grades K-12 in Florida over a several day period, resulting in peak loads of 60,000 concurrent users. Web Performance, Inc. was engaged by the website contractor, Infinity Software Development, Inc. to help them tune the website to perform at these levels. The tests themselves consisted of a series of forms, each of which was different for each grade, and each skill level within the grade, resulting in a complex matrix of test cases.
