Automatic or Manual Configuration?

In order to record a Business Case, your browser must to be configured to work with Web Performance TrainerTM. The software automatically detects browsers installed on your operating systems and configures Web Performance TrainerTM to use the browser you select. The browser also has to be configured in order for recording to work. In most cases this configuration will be automatic, however, in two specific cases you will have to do manual configuration:

VPN or Modem
If your computer uses a VPN or modem to connect to the network you need to follow the special configuration process.

Internet Explorer Automatically Detect Settings Option
Examine your Internet Explorer network settings by selecting Tools->Internet Options->Connections->LAN Settings. If the option "Automatically detect settings" is checked you'll need to follow the manual configuration process.

:

Note that the goal of Web Performance TrainerTM is to automatically configure the browser under all conditions, and each release gets a little closer to that goal.

Choose a Browser

The first time you start Web Performance TrainerTM, it will look for supported browsers on your system. Then you will be presented with this dialog:

Configure Browser

The browser that you select will be used for recording Business Cases and viewing help documents. Depending on the capabilities of the browser, some or all of the automation options shown will be available. If your browser is not listed, you should select 'custom browser' and then manually configure the path to your browser program (use the '...' button to find the program file). The browser automation options are described below:

  • Automatically configure browser when recording - If enabled, Web Performance TrainerTM will automatically change the proxy settings of the browser before starting a recording session. The settings will be restored when you exit Web Performance TrainerTM
  • Launch browser when recording - Web Performance TrainerTM will launch a new browser window each time you start a recording session.
  • Clear cookies before recording - In order to ensure an accurate recording of a user session, it is highly recommended that you clear the browser cookies before recording a Business Case. If the cookies are cleared automatically, they will be restored when you exit Web Performance TrainerTM. If the selected browser does not support this option, you should perform this step manually before each recording.
  • Clear cache before recording - Clearing the cache is almost as important as clearing the cookies. If the selected browser does not support this option, you should perform this step manually before each recording.
  • Inherit browser's proxy settings - If enabled, Web Performance TrainerTM will read the proxy settings used by the browser and use it for recording and playing tests.

After you have selected a browser and the desired options, press the 'Ok' button. You may change your browser selection at any time from the properties editor (menu Edit->Properties).

If your browser is not supported or if you have deactivated the "Automatically configure browser when recording" setting, you will need to configure your browser's proxy settings manually. Detailed instructions are available for Internet Exploder and Netscape (4.x, 6.x and Mozilla). If you are running Windows and using Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator or Mozilla browsers the automatic configuration will probably work for you. If the selected browser supports automatic proxy configuration and you elect to use it (strongly recommended), no further configuration is required.

To test the proxy configuration of your browser, start Web Performance TrainerTM. If you are using automatic browser configuration, start recording (green arrow button or menu option: Record->Start Recording). Your browser should be launched automatically and directed to the welcome page. If you see a welcome page, then your browser is correctly configured for the HTTP protocol.

If you elected not to automatically launch the browser on when recording, you will need to launch the browser manually and enter the following URL: "http://wptrainer".

If you will be using SSL, then you also need to test the SSL proxy configuration. Click the SSL link displayed on the welcome page. This may take quite some time (up to a minute on slow processors...see the section on SSL for more details). If you see another welcome page, then your browser is correctly configured for the HTTP protocol using SSL security.

Now you are ready to try browsing to a web site. Enter the URL of a web site (preferably the web site you intend to load-test). If you can view the web page, then your browser has been successfully configured. If the web page does not appear as normal, try stopping Web Performance TrainerTM and restarting your browser. Then verify that the web page is currently accessible in the browser without Web Performance TrainerTM running. If you are able to access the web site when Web Performance TrainerTM is not running, then you may need to configure your browser manually (see section above).

VPN/Modem

If your Windows computer is connected to the internet via an ISDN modem, phone-based modem,  or VPN there is an extra configuration step that must be completed. Unfortunately the normal Windows network settings are ignored when the internet connection is made via these methods and there is a simple change that must be made before and after using  Web Performance TrainerTM.

To tell if your computer requires this extra step bring up Internet Explorer and bring up the Internet Options Dialog. (Usually Tools->Internet Options). Click on the Connections Tab to examine the network configurations:

If extra configuration is needed you will see an entry in the Dial-up and Virtual Private Network settings. Select the dial-up or VPN connection you are using and click on the Settings Button:

Make sure the "Use a proxy server for this connection" is checked, and then click on the Advanced Button:

If you are using the default settings use the loopback address 127.0.0.1 and the port numbers as shown in the Proxy Settings Dialog, above. If these ports are in use on your computer you can configure other ports in the Web Performance TrainerTM proxy dialog.
